Still confused as the easiest way to set this up...have tried a few different things, usually resulting in duplicate emails, etc....would anyone mind shooting me a PM with a how to best practice so I can get my gmail emails sent to my BB?
Also, do I need the @blackberry email setup on the phone as well?

You don't "need" the @blackberry email set up on your phone.
1) go into the settings of your gmail account and allow imap and pop.
2) log into your BIS and put in your login and password for your gmail account
3) create a filter so emails from that account don't get forwarded. ie, for account , create a filter so emails with a from address of don't get forwarded.
Creating the filter will prevent your sent mail from getting sent to your BB. You might also wanna create a filter to prevent "delivered" emails from being forwarded if you have delivery confirmation enabled on your phone.
Thats about it. No need for an elaborate PM detailing "how to" cause its pretty simple.

It comes down to preference really, I prefer to keep my Gmail separate from my BB inbox which is mainly used for work. So you first need to decide how you will be using the emails and if you want to have all your emails (various accounts) going to your BB Inbox.
As far as notifications go though, if you leave the app logged in and running in the background, you will get notifications and you can set the tone of choice in profiles.

I do what many of you do. IMAP into my inbox, which does sometimes have a bit of a delay, and the Gmail app too. I use the Berry inbox to archive what I call 'sort of spam' that I have subsribed to and leave other mail in the inbox there but delete on the handheld. I always use the Gmail app to reply/search. I think I do this because I have been using Gmail longer than there has been a Gmail app for the device. I have been thinking about deleting it from BIS but I probably won't because the App doesn't remember your login info when you battery pull and I often forget to log back in until I want to use the app.

you do know that the gmail goes to a separate folder it doesn't all go to one box. Each email address on BIS has its own folder. So unless you just want the gmail app you dont need it.

I did not however, know that Gmail was so integrated with BIS that they could speak to each other without BIS asking Gmail; "Got anything for me?"

BlackBerry Search Results
Gmail has had tight integration with BIS since before Gmail even supported POP or IMAP.
The specialized integration offers nearly instantaneous message delivery for BIS users, in addition to supporting two-way delete reconciliation. While GMail does have it's ups/downs/slow periods, this integration has been relatively stable since late 2006.
Oddly enough, setting up GMail as an IMAP account with BIS also enables two-way read mark reconciliation at the expense of delayed message delivery. IMAP seems to cause GMail to fall back to the typical 15 minute polling cycle of a normal POP/IMAP account.

I see one common denominator with the two who are getting it quickly; Verizon. Can you read me now? I'm with ATT and not sure if their BIS is slower?
I'm on IMAP currently. I was using POP but I moved to IMAP to use the read-sync feature. I map try going back to POP, as I hadn't heard that might be quicker than IMAP, thanks!

This is not carrier related.
I am on AT&T and GMail/BIS message delivery is real-time.
Your problem is that you're set up for IMAP. IMAP with GMail/BIS is delayed.

The Gmail app is best used for searching for messages. Within the app you can search, star, archive, delete, move to different labels, and almost everything else you can do from your laptop.
The only thing that sucks from the Gmail BIS option is that all your emails are still unread when you log into gmail on your computer.
|
So you're obviously using POP then, or your email would show as read on your PC, if you read it on your berry. That may explain the quicker delivery. Jury is still out on that one (for me) but I think I'm going to go back to POP and see if that's better.

Thank you. I really thought it was a delay I was just going to have to live with. I didn't realize IMAP was actually responsible for the lag time I'm seeing the majority of the time.

Well in fairness... it was still 18 minutes earlier than the 20 minute lead time delay they inform you of when adding a new email account. I removed and added my Gmail account, rather than change it, and disabled IMAP and re-enabled POP on GM site.

In my experience, it's best to Disable both POP -and- IMAP on your GMail account.
Then delete and re-add the GMail account in BIS.
BIS will 'probably' force POP to turn back on in GMail. No problem... allow that to happen.
Check your delivery times after you do the above.

Indeed it did re-enable POP on its own. That guy took about 45 seconds from desktop to berry. It did hit my Gmail nearly instantly from my work account.

Oh most certainly. A problem I just thought I had to live with even
I do remember my Gmail being quicker when I first set it up. I don't why I didn't correlate the slow down to the IMAP change.
Anyway... thanks guys
