I was hoping someone had the name and address of a VP of Verizon Wireless and/or RIM.

RIM has nothing to do with this. Verizon is forcing the data plan, writing to RIM will be a wasted cause. Go into your local store and complain to them, ask for a district manager if you wish. at some point you wont be able to keep going up the chain, but that may take quite a bit of time, and alot of your effort.

With tmo, if you have, say a texting plan, you can call them and have them activate some blackberry enabler thing, and you can use data as pay per use. Tmo is the only company I have heard that does this though.
I do agree, however, that they should all just require it. After all, isn't a blackberry first and foremost, a phone with awesome email ability?
Most smaller CDMA carriers enforce this as well. AT&T and Tmo allow you to get the device without a data plan.

Well, yes - it is a phone first. And has additional capability. Are you going to rag on someone on these forums because they don't use the GPS on their handset even though they have the capability? Or they hide the task icon because they don't use it? We're adults - we know what we want out of a product. In my case, I use my BB to its full extent - around 2000 minutes and 20 MB / month. My wife uses about 300 minutes / month. Maybe once she has it she would like the internet (and even email) but at this point, she doesn't want to spend the money on it - she's got other priorities.

it boils down to that the BB isnt the right device for her then, or at least the Verizon BB. You could always switch her to another carrier if she "has to have" the BB. Tmobile will be launching the pearl 2 in the next few days, and AT&T already has it. Both of these carriers offer BBs sans data plan.

That's all public information. You didn't search very hard for information, did you?
