Weird I apply lotion in the winter as well bc of dry skin and my trackpad responds just fine with dry hands or lotion on them.

Wirelessly posted
Different lotion was suggested above and answered, I know, but FWIW, in another life 30+ years ago I worked outdoors and used a protective hand lotion that was mostly lanoline. I remember that stuff absorbed right into the skin. After a few minutes, and working with tools, there wasn't a hint that I had applied anything to my hands (except skin didn't dry out and crack). I wonder if a lanoline based lotion would make a difference?

I feel funny discussing microfiber cloths and lanoline lotion. What have I become? :sob:

I use lotion as well but wipe it off the tip of my thumb that I use for the trackpad, it seems to help me.

Well... after all of that, and after being convinced there wasn't anything wrong with my phone, now I'm not so sure. My girlfriend explained to me that she has only had an issue with her trackpad once, and that otherwise her phone is fine. Apparently I misunderstood her the other day.
I tried to use her phone, and I had no issues at all. When she tried to use my phone, she had the same difficulties that I did. So, now I am thinking that the phone is broken. So, now I'm off to make a phone call for a replacement (either warranty or insurance). I'll check back in once I receive the replacement phone.
Therefore, it looks like I get to keep using the BlackBerry after all. It still seems strange to me that the trackpad is ultra sensitive when running a microfiber cloth or paper towel over it, but struggles when I use my finger. I just can't come to a conclusion that I am 100% confident with (broken phone versus screwy fingers).

I called AT&T warranty support and they really went above and beyond to help me out. Even though I was slightly (by about a week) past my 30 day exchange period, they made arrangements for me to visit the nearest corporate store for an exchange with a new device. So, I took back my first 9700 and got a brand new one.
Knock on wood... so far so good. The phone is working exactly as it should. In the morning I'm going to upgrade to the latest released OS, get connected back to Exchange, and install my apps.
I really thought the first phone was fine and that I was doomed to not using BlackBerries any longer because of some strange trackpad issue, but apparently not. I still can't explain why it would work intermittently, but all is well that ends well. I appreciate everyone's input in this thread, and I'm glad I got this resolved.

wow, I am not a regular handlotion person per se, but I do leave a light greasy film on my 9700 when I talk on the phone with the handset directly. I do admit that using the trackpad immediately has been a bit tricky sometimes, but never a crazy issue as I would simply wipe my phone off or at least clear the track pad...if I detect that the usage of the pad is not good...I do take a high concentrated moisterizer..sometimes
using a rubbing alcohol wipe does wonders - I get them from CVS, where they have the regular rubbing alcohol bottles.
so I wonder if the track pad maybe needs a good cleaning in the AM or in between....just a gentle wipe...

Glad to hear things are looking up for you.
My suggestion to anyone with moderate to extremely dry hands is more of a treatment than simply applying a little lotion. When you are to go to sleep ........ apply Vaseline (petroleum jelly) to your hands and wear cotton gloves. The gloves are to prevent getting Vaseline on everything and allow your hands to breathe.
Stay away from non-greasy and scented lotions; they are short term and rendered useless the first time you wash your hands.

The trackpad on the new Blackberries works just like and optical mouse, sensing the "flaws" in your thumb to sense which way it's moving, just like an optical mouse senses the flaws in your desk or mousepad. You are filling in/reducing the flaws with a liquid. I would imagine any lotion would do the same thing. Maybe a moisturizer that absorbs into your skin better would be the best answer for you?

Are you talking to me? If so, as I stated earlier, it was a trackpad issue with my previous device. My replacement 9700 works fine, lotion or not.

No problem. I actually find it somewhat funny that this thread is still going on. And for the record, I'm definitely not slopping it on! ![Wink](http://www.blackberryforums.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)

Is this really an issue of major concern? My trackpad works with gloves; therin lies your answer.

Clearly it does. Perhaps a moderator should have the ability to lock it once the problem has been identified and rectified. It might also help if people didnt post whiny moaney complaints on here. Questions with answers drag on much less dear Sir.
All the Best
