this sucks! now i don't really know if the person got my text or not. granted unlike bb messenger you didnt know the person read the text, but it was always useful to know that it reached their phone.

Still working for me... Western NY.

I love this feature and I WILL complain when it goes away. Strongly.

I recommend voicing your opinion now instead of later. Once it is gone it is gone for good.

I agree with you in theory but I haven't seen anyone quote a source that's verifiable. Are you really suggesting that we call Verizon and complain about something that's the subject of a "rumor" on various Blackberry-related forums?

Based on your tag line, you work for Verizon (or maybe an authorized reseller?). Do you know of any official source we can refer to when calling?

I do not work for a reseller I work directly for Verizon Wireless. As I said, I highly recommend voicing your opinion now. Once it is gone completely it will not be back.

That is what the discussion is about. This function is being shut down.

Unfortunately it's already too late for me to do that. It stopped working sometime late yesterday. I'll be placing my call shortly to report a "problem", pretending to be clueless about their plans, and then voicing my complaint when told that it's intentional.

just figured that i would report in about verizon eliminating the delivery confirmation on SMS...

I have Verizon and I live in the tri-state Philadelphia area. The SMS delivery confirmation stopped working as soon as it turned midnight yesterday night. Thus, it stopped officially working for me on 9/18/2008

I called up a Verizon rep today and was told that the service was implemented and it has not gone nationwide yet, but it eventually will. I voiced my opinion in the kindest of words possible while being in rush hour traffic and pissed off that Verizon is eliminating a SMS feature that has been around for years and years...and I was told that my opinion would be taken into consideration (my @$$). Regardless, I'm sure they are saving data throughput by not having that extra bit of data sent back to the originator of the message. While data throughput might not translate into direct cost savings, it frees up network bandwidth which might be the staging grounds for more multimedia mobile services which Verizon will make you pay for, etc.

I'm extremely unhappy with the move, but there's nothing we can do about it. At least Verizon customers still have the ability to send 7 text messages in one message . ATT customers (formerly Cingular) haven't ever had this feature, so believe it or not Verizon subscribers, it is possible to live without it! ha ha. I'm sad to see it go.

I made my call yesterday, and submitted my feedback on the Verizon Wireless Customer Satisfaction Survey.

As I understand it, SMS messages are delivered using the control channels for voice calls, which is why you can get SMS while on an active voice call, but not get MMS, email, or otherwise use data while on an active call, since voice and data can't be used at the same time. Assuming this is true for the moment, eliminating the SMS delivery confirmations won't open up room for anything other than more SMS messages. Assuming that a SMS delivery confirmation requires as much resources as a user-initiated SMS, and that all SMS are within Verizon (they can't be), this would double their message-handling capacity.

I've only been with Verizon for two months, and I believe I had to specifically enable requesting delivery confirmation on my BB. But I just used my son's Alias the other day and found out that it was on by default, with no apparent way to disable it (it stopped working the next day anyway). Perhaps a reasonable solution would be to change the default to disabled, and still allow the feature for those who specifically enable it? That way, people who want it will get it, and those who don't know or care won't.... know or care.

All of the SMS text messages that I send to friends that are with Verizon show the D when the message is delivered. When I text my friends that are with a different carrier the D does not appear when the message is delivered.

I just tested it and it still shows the D and a check mark when the message is delivered.

I filled out the survey as well and I'm calling now. This is a good feature, I want it back!
