I actually work for Bell developing VoIP solutions for Enterprise, and have used something similar to this on the BB... no Voice in the past - only IM, presence, click-to-call, etc. but Voice could be on the horizon.

An interesting timely article http://news.zdnet.co.uk/communicatio...9267682,00.htm

Subject: 1x vs EVDO at *****

Jacquie,

I managed to get the EVDO update for my 7250. I noticed that when I'm inside **** I'm always 1X. As soon as I leave the building I go to 1XEV. I believe this is because the "mini-tower" at **** maybe an older 1x tower. Any word when this will be upgraded to EVDO?

One Year old 7250...took for the Flash...
all the stores in Brampton Listed aren't ready (National Wireless), and sent me to their sole location doing the Flash in Oakville (Dundas and Winston Churchill.
Buddy did the flash, and handed it back to me with "1x".
He said, "I did a test call, and it's good to go"
I said, "there's no data connection if it's 1x, and shouldn't it say 1XEV?"
-they have a cool display with live wireless devices..palm, blackberry, etc. While waiting for the flash, I raced a 1X 7250 and a 1XEV 7130e...and the 7130 beat the 7250 by atleast 25%...so, I thought, it got EV, mine should...
He said, "give it a half hour, it'll go"
I asked, "did you make the necessary code change to my plan?"
he said, "I noticed your data plan had one wrong letter, and I fixed that".
great, I was predicting problems at this point.
So, I watched the screen on the drive home, and it was communicating on and off quite frequently, then it flashed 1xev, and back to 1x.
Continuing home, out of the EVDO area, still no data.
Called 877-DATA-123 at 3pm, and told my story, and the guy said, "I'm going to take your data package off the network and put it back on...give it a half hour. It's taking a bit longer than normal, but I can see the work order in queue"
I gave it an hour, called back. New guy said, "yeah, I had to do that to my own device, you have to take it off and reconnect it, and it will work".
I said, "dude, it's not working. buddy said 'give it a half hour', it's been an hour".
he said, "Yeah, it usually takes a half hour. if it doesn't work within that time, it will take an hour to 4 hours".
"oh, I understand. that makes a ton of sense."
he said, "I see the work order, it's still in the queue, our network is really slow right now for some reason."
5 hours passes. I call back. tell the story, and 'cut to the chase'.
"your work order is still in queue".
"c'mon. at most, this was supposed to take 4 hours. we're now at 9."
"if you don't have it by morning, we'll escalate it".

this is the short version. of course, I asked how to expedite it, yadda, yadda.
I've rebooted, wireless on and off'd, resent service books, and watched Survivor.
We'll see what happens. If nothing happens in the morning, I will call and ask for them to switch out the ESN, like previously mentioned in this thread.

Signed,

Default EVDO/Voyageur

So I finally got the flash done, have Voyageur, and can connect to the internet - but I can't seem to connect at 1XEV, just 1X - the fastest connection i get is 115.2 kbps... any other Bell Mobility customers able to connect at EVDO speed?

Default Real-Life speed tests

I've upgraded my Bell 7250 to EVDO. Here is a report on real-life speed with this new wonder.

When connecting using Voyageur, a "baloon" at the bottom will say "connected at 115kbs". Just disregard this baloon, as itis not representative of the speed you get with EVDO.

To make a real test, I went to myspeed.visualware.com. Here are the results from downtown Montreal, last Wednesday:

Download: about 500kbps
Upload: about 110kbps

Today, I am downtown Vancouver, and here are my results:

Download: about 300kbps
Upload: about 100kbps

So your milleage will vary depending of the signal strength (I had full bars in Montreal, now only 3 or 4 in Vancouver)

But it sure beats any other wireless solution!!

I left you with: "if you don't have it by morning, we'll escalate it".
So, morning comes around, and still no data.
I call 877-DATA-123 for the 4th time.
I tell him my whole story.
He checks and says, "your work order is completed, so it should work"
I say, "should is far from the real thing".
So, he walks me through re-programming my device.
I went into the programming screen, made no changes and then it flashed/saved/rebooted.
still no data
Then I went into the programming screen, and changed my number to 000-000-0000. Then it flashed/saved/rebooted.
still no data...but that should be expected.
Went into the programming screen again, and changed my number to my real cell phone number. Then it flashed/saved/rebooted.
still no data
During this process, I told him that I had read on BBF that a swap of the ESN and then back again would most likely fix the problem. He said, "if this doesn't work, we'll try that".
We get to this point, and it's time to try the ESN swap.
He initiates the process, and puts me on hold.
2 minutes later, my Blackberry starts buzzing and ringing as 20 hours of e-mail and pins come in.
He comes on the line, "I swapped your ESN, and I don't know if that worked..."
I tolk him it was working, and he said he would share that with his colleagues.

Now I have EV-DO
I notice about a 25% increase in speed on data.
I'm going to try voyageur soon.

One other new quip...
I'm on BIS 2.0, and on my homescreen, I now have a new icon that says, "E-mail Settings"
Clicking it takes you right into the BIS settings, so you can add and manage accounts on the device as opposed to logging in.
This was new, and probably came down after I re-sent the service books in attempt to get data.

Quite the fiasco...good times.

You'll also notice there will be one email icon per BIS account (gmail, rogers, bell.blackberry.net etc...) which you instansiate within the BIS.

Do you have any more details on this? I have been unable to receive email or any kind of data connection since I did the PRL flash update. I have been working with the data folks to no evail as well. I am scheduled to hear back from them tomorrow morning. Do I just need to tell them to "swap my ESN and then back again?"

thanks!

Default Can't drive 500 mile for Upgrade

Just new here. I have followed this with interest. I have a requirement for a new PRL to access new digital towers here in the North. Bell techs have confirmed that a new PRL will (should) solve the issue. I already sent my 7250 out but it was swapped under warranty with another unit with the same PRL (30378) There is no EVDO here but I do have 1X data access.

Another forum has posted what appears to be the Bell EVDO flash software and total instructions. Being new and a long way from support I am leary to test it. This package has what appears to be the code required and all I need is my MIN/MDN which I am told by bell is simply my unit phone number.

Have some of you experts seen/loaded this software. Do you recomment I try it? I am not familiar with all the rules so I am hesitant to point to the software unless it's allowed.

Hi there, and welcome to the forums.

Can you tell us what other forum has posted these instructions so that we can take a look at them? You should be fine pointing to them (or copying them and quoting the source).

The Master Service Lock (MSL) is unique to each device. You will need the MSL specific to your device's ESN in order to use the Bell Mobility PRL update software.
