Default Can I use VOIP using data only?

Please Login to Remove!

I've been searching around for several weeks trying to find an answer to this question, so I'm finally going to ask here and hope someone else has found the answer.

I'm headed to Europe in a few days and I have Unlimited International Internet and E-mail on my T-mobile account. Is there a VOIP service I can use that uses only the data stream so I can call back to the US on my phone and not incur normal $0.99/min airtime charges?

Thanks in advance for the help.

I don't think there is a VOIP service that you can use for this, but even if there is, an EDGE or GPRS connection would not provide anywhere near the amount of bandwidth needed for a call.

A program called iSkoot might do the trick for you. Its a Skype program for Blackberry. I never tested the application myself for VoIP calls though, so I have no feedback regarding that aspect of the program.

Just a quick nit to pick here...the bandwidth needed for most VoIP calls is actually quite low. EDGE could easily provide enough *bandwidth* for these calls. *Latency*, on the other hand, is a big issue. The variable latency on the EDGE/GPRS networks would make VoIP unbearable. The VoIP codecs just can't deal with that.
