Research In Motion Posts Small Gain, Loses Subscribers

Research In Motion Ltd. posted a small net gain in its fiscal third quarter, swinging back to profitability but falling short of resolving some of the biggest challenges facing the BlackBerry maker as it gears up to introduce its new line of smartphones next month. RIM said it had bolstered its cash position in the quarter. But it also reported it had lost about one million BlackBerry subscribers in the period, which ended Dec. 1. RIM now has a total of 79 million global subscribers... RIM posted net profit of $9 million, or two cents a share, in the quarter. That compares with net income of $265 million, or 51 cents a share, in the same period a year earlier. RIM also announced that its chief information officer, Robin Bienfait, was retiring after six years at the company

Saw that. Apparently one of their exec's made a statement to the media that they were losing a lot of customers. RIM should lose him.

More likely due to them announcing changes to their service tiers for BB10. Service revenue has been a money machine for them with carriers paying $1-2 per user, per month for access to the RIM BES/BIS infrastructure.

Any disruption to that model is going to jeopardize the one area that has huge margins for them.

Asked how service fees paid by consumers and businesses will change with the coming BlackBerry 10 platform, RIM (US:RIMM) Vice President Paul Carpino essentially said it's unclear. We just aren't providing the detail on it at this time. ... You'll have to wait, he added.
