Default 9780, software sluggish, busy clock appearing, battery drain / memory leak!! help!

Please Login to Remove!

Hi there - have recently got a Blackberry Bold 9780 on corporate scheme from Vodafone UK.

Originally came with software version .294 I think.... had problems with battery draining very fast so upgraded a few days ago to the latest version I can see on website, which is .546.
6.0 Bundle 2474 (v6.0.0.546, Platform 6.6.0.207)

Since doing this, a number of problems:

a) battery drain I don't think has improved

b) main issue is handset is very sluggish.... black clock-symbol hour glass frequently popping up and spinning in screen. Have to wait until it has finished doing this before I can do anything. Having to do battery pulls to get it working again sometimes.

c) boot up time after a battery pull seems slower than before.

basically, b is the main problem and quite a big one!! the thing doesnt seem useable at all.

Have been into the application settings on the handset, and the system software seems to be quite often running at very high CPU level (hence I guess the sluggishness).

Is this a known issue with this build?

I think I probably need to regress back to an older version of the o/s. What version is recommended as the most stable for the 9780, and best in terms of battery drain, memory leakage and responsiveness? is it .480? please advise.

Also, can you let me know where I can get this version from?

Finally, when I upgrade/downgrade versions, is there a way to avoid having to do whole enterprise activation process again, and just change o/s version?

Help greatly appreciated - this is driving me made and my old curve 8310 was better!!!!

Thanks,
Matt

If it is a company BB on BES, you need to chat with the BES Admin/IT Staff before you do anything.

sorry, should have been clearer... it is individual blackberry, but connected via bes to office.

was on a blackberry curve 8310 before which was fine.

Definitely a problem with this as CPU on the device seems to be being very heavily consumed by the system software and also phone (even when not on phone!)

Yes. Do it with the power on. Wait at least 30 seconds.

With regard to the sluggish behavior, have you taken a second look at after-market apps you are running, or maybe a corporate app? Pay attention to what is open and running at the time you are having trouble, and note that some apps may be set to run in the background when closed.

having done a battery pull/reboot the blackberry is now doing nothing. If I go into application management to look at CPU usage I would expect to see not a lot... the Phone app is going up and down from low percentage, to 36, 78 and even 98%/100% usage... even though doing nothing. Basically it is chewing up the CPU...
And in the last 4 hours the battery has gone from 100% to 60%, even though I'm not doing anything with it.
None of the other apps I have installed seem to be doing anything with the CPU...

Help - any ideas? why is the thing just draining battery. Have got it set in 2g only mode, GPS wireless and bluetooth switch off... yet CPU still really busy with "phone" and battery draining.

Yeah, i do remember seeing the phone app in particular being an issue with the newest builds. Try downgrading by a build or two; i don't remember the build i was running, but i know it was recent and did not have this problem. IIRC, it was the version for 9700 that leaked out about a month before this current leak.

I have a 9700, and while the software build i put on it is custom i am not having any problems with the .546 build.

I get 18+ hours with wifi/3g/BBBridge enabled. That's with a counterfeit batter mind you, so with my year old, but OEM battery, i get 24+.

Best of luck.

Also, now you know why you're not supposed to upgrade the software unless your carrier approves it. They test it for a lot of bugs and the like. If you're going to upgrade right away, at least come here (and to the other usual places) to see what other people are saying about the new builds.

546 has some issues with slugishness from time to time, but it's not sluggish for me most of the time. I get the busy clock once in a while, but it's a short lived one, when it happens. I'd suspect 3rd party apps being more of a culprit than the OS.

Re: Enterprise activation - it will always do that after an OS update, but it's a short process and changes nothing, really. You can't stop it either way.

I've had my 9780 for about 3 months. I have used every official and leaked OS on it. Yes, the newer versions have had a CPU issue and just installed 6.0.0.570 last night.

So far, its okay. Unless I load up a certain audiobook app. Then I get massive slowdowns and I end up staring at the hourglass.

Every BB6 version I've tried is a pain, eventually. Memory bleed usually gets ridiculous after a couple weeks and battery pulls don't help for long. Same with my 9700. I used every OS for that one too.

Yes, 480 was pretty good. I used it for 3 weeks and was very pleased with it.

Here's 480....

If you want to try the latest, here's 570...

9780/6.0.0.570 Leak
http://www.fileserve.com/file/pYfvAPq

If you downgrade to 480, you'll need to go to add/remove programs and uninstall any BB6 versions and reboot the PC. Then install 480. Then make sure DMgr is closed and go to

C, program files, common files, research in motion, apploader folder - then run Loader.exe

Plug in the BB and load 480. (You won't need to delete the vendor.xml as its a blank vendor file)

I've also had success running BB Boss with 536 on my 9780. I shrank the OS. Removed languages, extra fonts, help files etc and the BB ran like a racehorse. The newest version (2.2 for PC) will also shrink the OS on your BB, directly... Without having to reinstall :D. I didn't select any "Advanced options".

Here's BB Boss 2.2 for PC

There's a link in the review

Hope this helps.

We are having the exact same problem with extremely high CPU usage of the 'Phone' application ever since upgrading to .534
Unfortunately no solution yet...

There must be some unique BES setting that we all have that you don't. Very strange how the few of us affected can all wipe our bberries clean and do a fresh install with no 3rd party apps and the problem keeps coming back.

...and we're on the same carrier too. What's your BES and Exchange version? It may be newer than ours...

I have checked this time and time again, but do not have the issues with the CPU that you all do. It might be your Sec policy that may be tighter than ours and is causing the phone to keep contacting the BES for Sec lookups...I don't know...

See this article - maybe it applies to you

http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/dynam...C&kcId=KB25412

Also - ask the sysadmin if the same thing happens on the BES CPU...VMware was known to sometimes cause these issues in the past
