Sprint confirms data outage (BES only?)
Please Login to Remove!
I just spoke to Sprint and they confirmed a data outage for my device, which is on BES. My girlfriend is BIS-only and her device is working normally at this time.

This issue is still affecting some users (both BES and BIS). According to the notification I just received, RIM has created a script of some sort to fix the affected devices, and will be releasing the devices PIN by PIN, which will take another 4 hours to complete.
The next update will sent to me around 10pm, so I'll update here.

Good to hear!
Mine never lost service (I have both a BIS and BES devices), fortunately, but my sister in law in Wisconsin did. Just curious where you're located...?

I am in Mesa, AZ, so I don't think it was geographically related.

Just received an update. RIM is still working on a resolution for impacted handsets. At this time, RIM is running multiple scripts to finish the reset of the PIN corrections. Blackberry device users may not have data services on any data network provider. This issue is not only impacting Sprint Nextel users, but is also impacting other wireless carriers.
Next update will be after midnight, and I hope to be sleeping..... so will update this thread in the AM if someone else doesn't.

It is definitely sporadic as I have been exchanging messages via BBM with a friend in the Los Angeles area.

Folks over at SprintUsers are saying that they've gotten service back after re-provisioning. It's helped folks who weren't getting their browser back.
Go to "Manage Connections"
Go to "Mobile Network Options"
Click on "Sprint PCS"
Click on "Start Provision

As of 10:42pm Eastern last night this issue was supposed to be resolved. If you're still having problems, you can try a battery pull, re-registering with the network, or the provisioning steps that rambo posted above.

Nearly 24 hours and I still have no data. When I got my tour, it had to be programmed with numbers and letters. I wiped the device thinking it was something I had done, now I wonder if I wiped all that information? I have done everything I can think of to no avail. I have the data arrows running in the upper right corner. I am also able to update profile and update provider, but when running diagnostics, I get no and abort all the way down. :(

If you wiped the device, the programming may have been wiped out as well (it is if you wipe an 8830 or 8330 from Sprint). However, redoing the Update Profile should have re-provisioned it. Have you also tried the 'Update Peferred List'? How about a battery pull?
I would contact Sprint and ask them for the programming codes (which are all numbers, no letters) and reprogram it yourself if the above doesn't help.

Ok guys, I'm totally new to the whole blackberry "scene" and to having a cell phone that can actually do something other than just make calls so bear with me here. What is a data outage and would it be the reason why I had to go to sprint earlier today to re-register my phone? For some magical reason, I got a text message yesterday telling me that my cell phone had been registered with the wireless network, even though it was already registered. I didn't notice that my cell phone had a new number in the "My number" box in the call log screen until later on in the day when I had to make a call. When I tried to make a call, it said that my phone wasn't activated and that's when I noticed the different number. I tried my calling my real number and it went straight to voice mail. So yeah, long story short, are these two things interconnected or should I worry about my phone and/or provider?

Sounds like someone screwed up and activated your device with someone else's number.
The Registration message you received is something that happens when the device is either manually (by you) or automatically re-registered with the network. It might happen automatically if you are out of coverage, have your wireless off for a while, reboot, etc.
You can do it manually (it won't hurt anything) by click on the Options icon, then Advanced Options, then Host Routing Table, press Menu button and click 'Register Now' from the pop-up menu.
I'd be very, very surprised if what happened to you was a result of the outage yesterday. I think it was an 'oops' on a Sprint rep's part.
Is your device working ok now?
