Hi guys,

Is there a way or a policy that can be used to remotely used to remotely or wireless NUKE a BlackBerry handheld?

I know you can wipe and disable remotely, but can you nuke it.

The reason is asked is if one of my users lost or had there BB handheld stolen, a smart crook would just back it up as soon as it they got it. If it was then wiped, all the crook had to do was reimport a backup file and they'll still have all the info that was on the BB handheld.

Not 100% sure what you're getting at here to be honest. Yes, apart from wipe & lock a hand-held remotely, you can nuke it remotely (on BES you have option to "Set Password and Lock Handheld" or "Erase Data and Disable Handheld", which AFAIK screws up the handheld OS to stop it functioning. However, I also think that these can be reloaded...)

However, AFAIK if a crook backs up the data fast enough, i.e. while the device is operational, they could restore that to an alternative device come-what-may. If that is a wrong assumption I am sure someone will correct me!

I use Domino and BES, and have implemented the ability to use encrypted messages on the BBs. OK, the users cannot send encrypted mail via BB, but if someone encrypts a message sent TO a BB user they can now read it on the device. AFAIK those messages would be safe come-what-may, as a notes user.id file has to be imported to BB Desktop Manager to make the feature work, but unencrypted messages would be vulnerable to a backup-then-restore-to-alternate-device.

~One thing that is key is to make sure your BB users KNOW to inform admins of lost/stolen devices ASAP.
I also use the password protection on device via policy (also idle time-out password prompt at AND device-in-use password prompt, just so that if a thief keeps pressing keys to stop an idle lockout, the device will still ultimately require a password) and if data is very sensitive, set up duress alerting via policy, teach users how to use it, and make sure you act quickly on duress alerts.

Thanks...but i tested the "Erase Data and Disable Handheld" and all i does is clear the info off, but ti doesn't kill the OS. Killing the OS was my intended goal. I know u can do it once it is connected to the BES via USB, but i was hoping it could be done wirelessly.

That would be great unfortunately not offered on BES

If a password is required, they can't backup and restore data because you have to have the password to use desktop manager. and 10 wrong attempts will wipe the device. Password protection is so important because it is your best first line of defense. And it isn't that inconvenient despite what some CEO types might say.
