Default BES & Groupwise Address Books

Please Login to Remove!

My understanding is that with Groupwise and doing a lookup for an address on the handheld that it will only search the Global Address Book.

Is it just me or does this not seem to make any sense at all?

In addition to the Global Address Book each user on the system has one or more address books in which they keep all of their other "personal" contacts that do not really belong in the global address book.

Is there no way to do a lookup for any of these addresses or synch them to the device? This seems like a major limitation.

You can do a lookup to the GroupWise System Address Book and then add the contact to the Contacts on the BlackBerry.

In addition, each user can choose one personal address book to synchronize to the BlackBerry. This is defined in the BlackBerry Manager by the administrator. The GroupWise System Address Book cannot be chosen and Frequent Contacts is not recommended.

Once you choose an address book to sync, you can drop contacts into the address book in the GroupWise client and they will sync to the BlackBerry device. As well, if you add a contact (either manually or through a lookup) to the BlackBerry it will be synchronized to the personal address book.

This functionality is common across the BES platforms whether it be the Exchange GAL or the Domino directory (terminology might be off here).

Default Frequent Contacts

Just wondering what you meant by "Frequent Contacts not recommended"?

Where did you see this information?

Mainly because frequent contacts changes so much. Each time you get a new email or send on out, it makes an entry that stays in frequent contacts for a period of time. Items are constantly getting deleted/inserted into FC. Most of the time it will just be an email addy (no name/phone/addy/nothing) and not of much use to the user in a "traditional" address book sense.

So the lack of info included in FC and the fact that it will be constantly updating is the main reason. We have a few users that requested it though and don't complain. It's generally something we don't practice with all our users unless they are knowledgable enough to know the disadvantages to using it for their addy book.

Thanks for all the info.

Since we are only doing an evaluation of the BES server we are pretty much just flying by the seat of our pants. I figured out how to specify the personal address book to synch in the user profiles.

Some of our users that have a lot of address books are not happy about only being able to synch one but once I showed them how to have one book and take advantage of the "categories" they seemed all right with it.

Default Frequent Contacts

Thanks for the info. That makes a lot of sense.

I've been syncing my Frequent Contacts and this has worked for some time but now I have nothing on my Blackberry as far as addresses go. If I go to address book, options, it says I have 282 entries but none show up.

Anyone have any ideas about this. We are running Bes 4.0 for Groupwise SP1.

Thanks,
Doug

Make sure there are no filters applied to the address book on your BB. If there are disable them.
