International: Wi-Fi connected, Web & Emails work; no UMA sign, no phonecalls

I love the fact that I can use the 8120 to call home for free even in places like Korea where GSM networks do not exist.
I am now traveling to India, and I have been able to connect my 8120 to wireless networks for making phone calls.
While keeping the mobile network in OFF position, in many places, the Wi-Fi connects fine, the Wi-Fi logo is in black and websites and emails work fine. However, UMA does not show up, and no phonecalls are possible. SMS messages do not work.
On going to Wi-Fi diagnostics, UMA Wi-Fi shows as available and connection, registration, and authentication are all check marked. Blackberry Infrastructure is connected with green check marks everywhere.
Essentially, the diagnostics screen looks like anything that you would see when UMA is functional.
Does anyone know why this is not working? The problem is usually noticed when Airtel is the ISP. Could an ISP block something for the UMA to not work even though it shows as everything is ok?
Any help would be tremendously appreciated.
Thanks!
PS: On another note, on a whim, I carried my T-Mobile @Home router and my home number along with me. That works great on the same DSL connection!
