Default data plan question...

Please Login to Remove!

I am plannign on getting a Blackberry Pearl and will be with the Bell network. I have heard that phones like the Blackberry constantly access the net on their own so if you don't have a data plan you will be charged per use. Is this true. I love the look of the Blacberry and can get one relatively cheap. I am a srudent right now but when I get a job I plan to get a data plan. Until then can I use my Blacberry without a data plan and avoid being charged some how?
Thanks for your help!

The BB will not access the internet without the BB data plan

There are APN/TCP settings that will allow you some third party application use, which your carrier can charge you an arm and a leg for. If you do so without a Data Plan, be careful. What is charged and what is not varies from carrier to carrier.

I too am on the bell network and use my pearl sans(without) data plan, bought the phone from a private party, transferred the number at the bell store, now for your question, i've had it for around 2 weeks now so i have yet to have a bill, but 3 different people at bell told me that there will be no extra incurred costs without a data plan. Hope this helps

And as long as you are not using data, there won't be.

Yes, don't install and use those third party apps that will use data...

As long as you keep data turned off, yes. What do you not understand.

You can go into Options > Mobile Network and set Data Services to Off. This will prevent you from using data.

I just turned mine off to test for you. I went into the browser and it says "Data Services are disabled. Go to Network Options to enable"
