I use Google Sync to keep my google domain email contacts and blackberry in sync. On my google domain email I have contacts sorted by "Work" and "Friends".

I know you can add a filter in your blackberry address book to show only personal or business, can I set it so it pulls the lists directly from my email or do I have to set each one on my blackberry to a category?

Is there a way on desktop manager to select a number of contacts at once and add them to a specific category instead of going one by one on the device?

Inside your address book hit the menu key and choose filters..

I'm not sure if filters are synced from Gmail however.

You don't manage contacts (or any data) in DM. You manage data via the app you sync with. I can't speak for Google either as I sync with Exchange/Outlook. Categories are definitely supported in Outlook, FWIW.
