How to do a hard reboot/restart on the 9700 without a battery pull ?

Alt + Right Shift + Del (when it's rebooting, repeat the step again).

No need for the 2nd reboot in the 5.X, One reboot does a full reset.

Its better to pull the battery I was told from a friend who works at RIM. Battery pull is a hard reset where Alt + Right Shift + Del is a soft reset.

Hard reset generally means everything is cleared from a device. Wrong term.

Also, on 5.x, a battery pull and the method described above are equivalent.
