I downloaded a theme which had cool wallpaper, but the theme itself sucked.

Is there a way to use the wallpaper out of the theme or just save it as a picture to use in different themes?

You can try contacting the creator of the theme. Some will share their wallpapers and possibly other things related to the theme.
