Not to GSM, but to HSPA+/LTE like Telus and Bell did. In Japan, both SoftBank and DoCoMo are on that mixture with standard bands (no GSM) whilst au (KDDI) is EvDO/LTE and Willcom is a weird homebrew called PHS. As an AT&T and previously T-Mobile customer, I've never had any issues roaming there as long as the phone had UMTS/HSPA in the 2100 band. More often than not, my old iPhone 4 picked SoftBank over DoCoMo. It should really be good for Sprint to get that cash.
