Desktop won't recognize BB

The device works fine with the DM at home, incl. sync.
Lastest DM, uninstalled, re-installed many times.
Plug in the device, USB mass storage works (has SD card). But DM won't recognize the device. Sometimes it will complain it can't connect to the device; sometimes it hangs; most of time just silent.
Plug in colleague's device: get prompt for password
DM works fine in terms of changing setting such as filter.
How do I troubleshoot?
