Verizon requires $400 (as well as AT&T), for not having any existing credit. This $400 is returned after 12 months of service. For AT&T, I believe its after the contract is over (2 years). This $400 sits in an escrow account, and is not put towards anything (bill, phone, etc), so I would still have to pay the price of the phone and the bills.
