One more thing: there is a school of thought that phones that double up as tethered modems generally perform slower than their PC card counterparts. Arguably due to the OS overhead, multi-function use, hardware optimization etc. It is conceivable therefore that performance that you are seeing is directly affected by these factors.
What I would like to see is comparative numbers between an AT&T PC or USB 3G card and a tethered Bold. That would be a real test in my opinion as both devices would connect to the same network under the same conditions (i.e. to the same laptop).
