Try a battery pull and see if that corrects it. With the device on, pull the battery for about 30 seconds. Reinsert it and let the device reboot and see if it comes back to life.

Thanks for the advice, but I've tried both hard resets as you describe and soft resets, it does no good.
Also, I have read about people with the same problem. From their posts I think I can safely conclude that my BB's OS is corrupted and I need to reinstall it.
So I guess the real question is: How do I reinstall the device's OS from a mac when the desktop software wont recognize the device?
Alternatively how can I make the software recognize the device?
