When I updated my Q10 (Verizon) to 10.1.0.4189 this behavior stopped. I was constantly having to reenter the password for contacts sync for my iCloud account. Now, however, it works perfectly. This leads me to believe it's an OS issue.

When you set up your GMail account the boxes to sync contacts along with mail is checked by default. If you did not uncheck it at that time you might have to delete your account and re-add it. If your GMail account splits off the account for contacts from email you can just delete the contacts account and leave email in place, unaffected.
