Thanks for the replies. Someone suggested to me that it could be due to the sim card possibly being a 2g one. If this was the case, would the 3g signal still show up for a few seconds?I tested it today in a very strong 3g area and it found 3g for a few seconds before going off again. In fact, the Bold seems to be the poorest phone I have ever owned for holding a signal even on 2g as it drops connection regularly.
