I get the same "Searching..." message while at work. My office is located in an area with very limited TMO coverage. However an AT&T tower is less than .5 miles. Go figure.
Do a tower search at
AntennaSearch - Search for Cell Towers, Cell Reception, Hidden Antennas and more. and find all cell towers in an 8 mile radius.
