I do know that that new versions of the BBMessenger beta (.17 and .32) fix this problem with OS 5.0.0.713 -- so a third workaround would be register for the BlackBerry Betazone and get the BBM beta.. I don't know what all countries the Betazone is allowed, or where you are, but you should try that.
