After doing a bunch of research on this topic, the only solution I have found is to put the full telephone number in the pager field in Active Directory for the user. Then setup global pim synch so that the pager field is set to "work phone" on the device. This way when you do lookups against the GAL, it pulls the pager field from AD and displays it as "work" on the device.
Unless someone else has a better solution?
