Default Data Service Not Available when using WIFI connection

Guys, Is the blackberry mobile design to always have Data Services when connecting to Yahoo Messenger, MSN and Gtalk?. I mean we cannot connect to those Messenger if we are using only WIFI connection?..Thanks,
