Don't worry and just do it.
I've done 4 OS upgrades now and last night failed mid upgrade leaving me with a white screen and 507 on it.
Part of the process is to make a backup of the device before wiping and upgrading.
Then if it works all is good and there is no need to worry but if it fails then you can use this link

I followed this process and am now back in possession of my phone with all its data because i was able to restore the backup.
the only problem is that all of your 3rd party apps will need to be restored but hey thats just part of the gadgetified wonderousness of this thing.
