I don't think you can use the speaker without the power plugged in. I believe it is an amplified speaker. The usb and headphone jack is on one cord with a custom end. Not sure if you can just plug in the headphones without the usb plugged in either. I will give both a try tonight.
There is a switch on the side to turn the charging on and off though. I don't recall it making a difference noise wise.
