Many people that use 8100s will purchase an extended battery and door combination, as they did with the 8700. Yes, it would be better if it were a RIM product as the 8700s were.
Sony HDD camcorders also had an "encrypted" battery and eventually third party products overcame the restriction, some worked well, some didn't.
Make em, let the market decide.
