I believe the g stands for GSM, and the g is the standard issue BlackBerry that they sell to providers who don't want to (or can't afford to) invest into a special and unique style.
Just like the e stands for EVDO, on the 7130e, doesn't it?
And the i stands for iDEN on the 7100i?
Which would mean, that the iDEN 8700 might be called the 8700i or the 8702i.
