Its a real pain. If you want to try out what the app store offers, installing an app from there / and removing it can take 30 minutes.
The OS was not designed for this.
If an application runs in the background, there is no way (for security reasons ?) it can be killed.
The OS and the filesystem is compressed. Decompressing and verifying takes time.
When the system starts, first, the JVM has to be loaded, and then the actual OS will start.
I would not call it poor design, its rather a very clever one, but I think it was never designed for toying around with it.
I RIM wants to make the blackberry more fun, this is something which must be improved.
