It's not. Completely apples (pardon pun) and oranges comparison. If the RF is marginal and the BER (Bit Error rate) is at the threshold putting your hand over the antenna area will bring it over the edge. Not the same as bridging the external antenna of the iPhone. It's a corner case exercise in fault injection.
I would hope RIM's in-house attorneys were watching the "event". I would expect RIM to be not very happy with the analogy.
