the purpose of UMA is to allow people to have coverage in their homes. It's particularly convenient for Blackberry customers because the phone will actually connect to eh Blackberry Internet Service via UMA. Voice will get routed over UMA essentially making all of those calls VoIP calls. however I don't believe that SMS gets routed over UMA. MMS very well might though. That's all data. And the phone won't make individual connections over WiFi either. almost all the traffic with the exception of maybe standard web browsing and email will get routed to your carriers gateway per the network settings that have been programmed into your phone per the company's setup
