I've tried to do a selective restore with Desktop Manager, and when I selected the "CustomWordsCollection" file from a previoius backup, it won't highlight the arrow to allow me to transfer it over to the BB.
Any idea as to why or how I can restore them?

go to Advanced and save the backup file to another filename (just to keep your original). on the new file, delete everything from the right side except the custom words database. save this file. go back out to the Backup/Restore screen and select restore then select that file.
