Preventing phone use after security wipe

If a user loses his device and the password is put in wrong too many times the device wipes of course, but then the phone is still usable. Anyway to prevent that without calling the carrier?

Interesting, I tried that version this morning 2 or 3 times and it would show the splash screen and close each time. 2.9.7 worked first time. Others have stated the same problem in this thread.

As other have stated the 2.8 version won't work on the 8830. You need 2.9.7 Build 157. With this version I was up and running this morning. The GPS network does appear to be down now.

Yes, because you can use the blackberry as a modem to a laptop. If your outside EVDO range but still inside 1X it would still work just wouldn't be as fast. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
