This is not specific to Vz. I have an 8830 on Bell and this happens to me as well. Honestly, when this happens I reset the Network through Services. Not sure if it works because it sends one call...

This happens to me all the time. I have to go into the Network Services and restart the Network. I thought it was a buggy phone and made them switch it but it kept happening with a brand new unit.
