Silly me - I had just upgraded to the VZW 8830 from the 7250 and ran into the same problem. I turns out that I had installed the incorrect version of the Desktop Manager, it was for the 7250 instead...

Alas, RIM will take care of BES related issues, they will refer you to your carrier if it's a device issue which I think stinks if the RIM software is at fault.

There is a way to sync your Blackberry with Linux, it's called Sync4J. You can check out www.sync4j.org.

I've not used this myself yet, but I'm not sure if you can use this with a Linux PDA...
