I exit mine from the menu and this keeps gmail from updating throughout the day. If you just hit the back button it stays running in the background but Exit Gmail from the menu seems to kill it...

I am sorry to hear it didnt work for you, pokey. It hasnt fixed me 100% but it does seem to be a lot faster in getting a 3 meter lock.
