I've been using the free version on CrackBerry...

I've been using the free version on CrackBerry and it really works very well. Would like to see some features implemented in the app, but I've certainly had no trouble/bugs whatsoever.

The GMail app only checks for new messages every 20 minutes or so. If there is something specific you need that BIS can't deliver then try the GMail app, otherwise I wouldn't bother with it.
