i have it on a pretty beefy server and i noticed it's pretty slow at times too. 6 minutes to log in or search for a user sometimes, others its fine. it was not like this in SP2.

you should be fine. it doesn't matter where the mail routes through. what matters is where the !besadmin and user mailboxes reside.
