I always thought when you get a message the entire top part of the screen turns red or something. Phantom theme is waaay cool I just wished it worked properly more than 50% of the time. =(

Don't have it on for service indicator, but I do have it for SMS messages only. Checking the SMS disables it, which then I can type out my SMS and emails in peace without having an irritating green...

It's a known problem, happens quite often with me too. Tested it out with a buddy sitting right next to me and sending through that thing is extremely laggy as well. I recommend IM+ or google talk.
