You don't need WiFi for anything other than using the connection when cell data is not available.
Flashing to another carrier won't change the bad ESN. My advice is to give it back, toss it or...

OOOPs. Bad ESN means it is probably done for.
Not sure if a GSM carrier would allow it on either once it is blacklisted by one carrier.
