As long as you follow the directions and delete the vendor.xml file if it is not your vendor that released the OS you will be just fine. Many people use an OS that is not from their vendor.

It would use data, and using data without a plan is pretty expensive. With ringtones you can just connect your pearl to your computer and drag and drop them from your computer.
