Your buddy might have had 5 bars of EDGE. If so, that would explain the difference in speeds. EDGE is considerably slower than 3G.

I agree with the terrible Nextel acquisition....

I agree with the terrible Nextel acquisition. Also, Sprint's customer service is probably the worst of any carrier. That tends to drive a lot of users away.
