Check in device manager whether it's showing up...

Check in device manager whether it's showing up as Blackberry Smart Phone. Uninstall and reinstall the software, reboot your laptop.

Well, I've narrowed it down to the charger as being the culprit. It's the only thing that could have fried the USB charging circuit. It's not normal, but I've never heard of a charger going bad?

I have seen it here and there, check plugging it directly into the computer, bypassing any hubs etc... It's rare that a reinstall of the latest blackberry software doesn't fix it though.
