Vodafone and Dimension Today Themes (Info ONLY - NO Download Available)

5 Attachment(s)
These are *NOT* available yet, so please do not ask where to get them (in related news, I'm now taking bets on how many requests are made within a week, either on this thread or through PM). With that said, I figured I'd go ahead and start a thread on it with some findings about the themes, just so everyone can get ready for their release/availability at some point sooner or later.

Note: You will need to install a NEW version of the OS - the Telstra OS is the only one currently available to the public that supports these themes, although they are not bundled with it.

If you've already installed the Telstra OS, then you know that the Zen theme has been updated with a few new additions. In the Options list, 'Home Screen' is no longer an option, as its now been replaced simply with 'Organize Applications' (which is what Home Screen used to have a button to).

For the Vodafone Today theme, in the Organize Applications list, anything that is faded is a hidden application and anything that has an underlined letter is a shortcut-enabled application (might have been this way with the Zen theme previously, but I'm not really sure), with the underlined letter denoting the shortcut key. Here are the ones that are listed:

Saved Messages
Search
Calculator
Compose
MemoPad
Tasks
Contacts
Alarm
Profiles
Settings
Keyboard Lock
Enterprise Messenger (Q)

Other shortcuts (not listed on applications list):
WAP Browser
Phone
Calendar
Browser (default Browser)
BlackBerry Messenger

Looks like C is a shortcut key for both Compose and Contacts. If both are enabled, then the first one that was selected will be the shortcut key (e.g - Contacts was shown and Compose was hidden, so if I enable Compose, then Contacts will still be the shortcut key; however, if I hide Contacts, then Compose will be the active C shortcut key).

Also, the Vodafone Today theme does not allow you to set your background image, which is okay, as it is obviously apparent that they spent a LOT of time making this theme VERY sleek and neat in design. Kudos to them.

For both Today themes, you are unable to change the sections on the home screen or rearrange the order of what is present. This will be viewed as a downside of the themes for most who are used to Zen or one of the icon-based themes. There are no stocks, RSS feeds, etc., so those of you who are used to the commercial 'Today' screens will likely be unimpressed with RIM's efforts on these - but atleast they are keeping companies such as Cross River Systems pacified in knowing that their stock offering is not going to compete with a commercial product in terms of robust functionality.

Attached are screenshots.

Also, a big plus to the Zen theme with the Telstra OS is that the icons for third party applications now work properly when they're placed on the home screen (instead of that DOS looking icon).

I am not asking for a download by any means, I am just interested to know where YOU got the images and information... Could you please share this?
Thank You

I'm going to do the upgrade to Telstra OS sometime this weekend. I can't wait for the Vodafone and Dimension Today themes to be available!!

OK, since all you mod's are being super secure about your information and I haven't been able to find out much. I have one question and one question only... Which models will they be available for? I have 7100v and looking at the telstra Os download it appears as if its only for 8700.

lgreenberg 04-30-2006 05:50 AM

I beleive the today themes are only for the 8700.

the mods aren't being secretive - i am. i've told the others just as much as you know, to be perfectly honest. they will be available for the 7100 and 8700 devices. with the way that Zen and the other Dimension themes run on the GSM 7100, i'd say to expect the same kind experience with these (slow initially and continually with some applications). they will likely be released for the 7130e and 7130g initially in a future OS (maybe), with the 7130u having them loaded as stock themes - i will make them available for the 7100 phones, barring no OS issues (someone will have to test it first, when they are available, as i no longer have a 7100 at my immediate disposal).

Ok thanks for clearing it all up.

New Bug in Voda Today:

Under some circumstances (not sure what), a SMS message that was deleted will remain on the Today screen under SMS/MMS. It CANNOT be removed. Workaround, so far, is to wipe the handheld and reactivate and restore. This sucks a big one. It has happened twice this morning alone, although not prior - could be something I did (restored old SMS messages last night), so let's see.

The Vodafone theme looks sweet but, unlike the Dimension Today theme, I do not see any indicator for the current Profile. Do my eyes deceive me?
Thanks!

Ahhh... Me thinks this a mortal flaw. So Dimension Today looks to be the one. Here is another question: In Dimension Today, does it use your chosen font on the Today Screen? (That is, will my appointments etc. appear in my preferred BB Casual Bold?) Thanks again!

Ok, I just wanted to get something cleared up. The Vodafone Today theme is DIFFERENT than the Vodafone theme that is in the Telestra update, correct? I only ask because I have the update installed and I don't have the Today screen on my Vodafone theme nor does my theme list in options has "Vodafone Today" listed, just "Vodafone". I'm just a bit confused and I would be just fine with a simply "yay" or "nay" meaning that the two themes are different. Also, if they are, anyone know when they will be released?

Correct.

The today themes aren't included in the Telestra update.

No one knows when they'll be released.

Nope - homescreen fonts remain indifferent from the Screen/Keyboard changes to the system font.

Just to note, the Vodafone Today theme is dependent on the Vodafone and Dimension-Today themes.
