Unlocked Torch for T-mobile...what functions will I lose?

Sorry if this has been answered somewhere already, but I'm working on getting an unlocked 9800 to use with T-mobile. Trying to get an idea of what will work and what won't. I think I read that AT&T's 3G won't work on T-mobile's network. Is that true? Anything else?

Wrong 3g bands

MidnightDraven 08-11-2010 03:11 PM

yes, an ATT 3G blackberry will not work on T-mobile's 3G network.

Dubdub 08-11-2010 03:29 PM

Really tough to say since so few people have one yet. Give it a few days.

Calling over wifi won't work with TMO and 9800 nor will 3G anything else is speculative at best

the Torch 9800 has the following freqs

UMTS/HSPA 1700/2100 MHz which is T-mobile 3G
AND
UMTS/HSPA 850/1900MHz at&t 3G

850/1900 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE 2G T-mobile and att

so yeah, it will work. do your research.
unlock and Enjoy!

wndrshwzn 08-11-2010 08:36 PM

oh yeah wifi is a universal standard set by the IEEE 802.11 series. a thru n, so.....wifi will work too.
y'all must have stock in att!

LMAO

Wrong!

Here are the freqs for the AT&T Torch
* Tri-band 3G UMTS networks: 2100/1900/850/800 MHz
* Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE networks: 850/900/1800/1900MHz

BlackBerry - Torch 9800 Specs. BlackBerry Torch specs about the new smartphone.

It will NOT work on T-Mo.

Now there may be a T-Mo version coming at some point with the T-Mo freqs, but not tomorrow.

And, obviously your research is flawed.

ATT and Tmobile are on different 3G bands. The 9800 will work on EDGE on Tmobile, and you will not get UMA (voice over WiFi) calling using it on Tmobile.

I think what he was trying to say that EDGE runs on Tmo 9800.. just not 3G :x

Absolutely FASLE. You fail. You get nothing. You stole Fizzy Lifting Drink. Good day, sir!

Check your facts at the source: BlackBerry - Torch 9800 Specs. BlackBerry Torch specs about the new smartphone.

If he's confusing EDGE with UMTS/HSPA, then he has no clue and should probably stfu. (y)

So, to summarize this all, tell me if I got it right.
If it works, it works.

I am glad this was brought to my attention, because I truly wanted a Torch, but was planning on buying it outright and unlocking it to use with TMO. But if I can't have 3g, then what's the purpose. And to be honest, I am not willing to go into a two year commitment with AT&T.
Oh well, me & my 8900 will have to go another mile or two I guess until the next thing from RIM comes along.

Wow. No one said it didn't have WiFi. They said you can't make calls over WiFi (see UMA). Please take your misinformation elsewhere.

Kamau 08-12-2010 05:03 PM

While I was just at the mall, I stopped in the AT&T store just to play around with the Torch, and discovered another reason for me not to have it.
Even if I were to switch over to them, they don't have 3g in my area. The rep told me it would be most likely around the end of the year, but went on to say it was supposed to be up & running last month.
The BB gods most be angry with me.

avelasqu 08-16-2010 02:01 AM

So is it safe to just keep my Mobile Network option to just 2G since Im on T-mo? Or will the 2G & 3G option help me in ANY way?

machiavell1 08-16-2010 04:38 PM

On a similar note (hesitant to open up a fresh thread for this, so apologies for using this one), would an unlocked AT&T Torch work on the UK's O2 network?

I had assumed that 3G and everything would work but now am a little concerned that it won't....

Many thanks,

MidnightDraven 08-16-2010 05:04 PM

From:
O2 - What are radio waves?

O2 UK = 900, 1800, 2100

Torch has 800/850/1900/2100

machiavell1 08-16-2010 05:12 PM

Thanks Midnight Draven - much appreciated. So 3G should work then, if I understand correctly.

I had read (I think on Crackberry but possibly elsewhere) that specific OS 6 service books would be needed also, so if the network hadn't launched an OS 6 device/Torch yet, that might scupper its use. Is this correct? I have ordered one and was really looking forward to it. Hoping it's not going to be a paperweight until the Torch is released in the UK....!

Cheers,
