Any thoughts on what's the best spoken navigation program? Att vs. Garmin? Any freeware that's worth using?

don't believe there is a voice navigation app that is free.

Nav4All might be worth a try. Garmin and Telenav are both paid apps. They are just OK. Nav4All is awful compared to them though. I'd go with Garmin as a one-time fee thing.

Just to add a little more information;

Telenav is the most feature rich of the on-phone apps. You cna plan trips on their website and when you start Telenav on the handset it syncs with your trips. And vice versa - stuff put in on the handset appears on your Telenav web page. Plus you can avoid legs and so forth. None of the others do that.

Garmin is next in that is has the next best map display and good routing, but few ease of use features compared to Telenav. Plus its a VERY pared back featyre set of their standalone GPSs. I don't know why they did that - Telenav is as feature rich as any standalone.

Amaze and Nav4All work but are nowhere near as refined and usable as Telenav and Garmin.

What you will find is that compared to a modern standalone GPS, they are all painfully slow. I use Garmin as a backup GPS if my wife has my Magellan 4350. Re-routing after a missed turn is very slow and map movement is jerky and uneven. But it does work.

It's a subjective decision. Try several out and see what fits you best. I prefer Telenav. YMMV.

Nav4all is voice guided and free.I can only comment on use in the UK and it works well here.Full time drivers may want an app with a few more bells and whistles but I find Nav4all quite adequate for my needs,

I use Amaze. This app seems to work good.

Which of these have traffic incorporated?

Garmin and Telenav have traffic. The others do not. Garmin is the better deal IF your GPS works without having Telenav onboard (mine doesnt - dang Verizon/Alltel - yes, I will switch carriers over this) or if you buy a bluetooth GPS receiver.

Traffic is barely worth worrying about. It really doesn't work all that well. Yet. One day it will, but that day is not yet.

I have a Dash Express, which RIM recently purchased, with traffic, and being rerouted due to traffic has saved me hours in the car. Hopefully RIM creates an app soon with their crowd sourcing technology.

Since my DE basically died on me, I've been using Nav4All, and I've been pretty happy with it for a free program.

On my way home last night, my traffic enabled Garmin painted my route home red and told me that there was a 19 minute delay on eastbound I90. When I got there, traffic was light and moving at 70MPH and over.

It lied.

The Dash looks like a good idea, but form what I understand it's not all that hot as a GPS. Check the review at gpsmagazine.com. But that seems to be the only good way to get reliable traffic data.

I'd still love to try one though.

Telmap is in beta and is currently free. I used it on a trip over Labor Day weekend and it get an excellent job. Otherwise, I use NAV4All or AmazeGPS but I've found they sometimes give odd directions.

I downloaded the trial version of the Garmin software, on my Sprint Curve. At first I really thought I was on to something and was ready to fork over the bucks for it ( currently using the pathetically slow and quirky telnav on sprint) but low and behold one afternoon the thing sent me packing on a wild goose chase, causing me to be late picking a friend up. I immediately removed the software. I MAY try it on my recently acquired Tour, 9630, just to be fair.
I am gonna think about a stand alone gps, and use the phone(gps) when in a jam.
I have a friend who uses Verizon Gps, put side by side with mine and it is much faster than telenav.

Telmap is awesome - especially considering its beta! There a re a few bugs and things that could stand improvement such as speaking and use of screen real estate, but routing was fine and so was re-routing when I deliberately left route. I really like that it downloads your whole trip right off the bat, without having to be constantly hitting the net. That's how it ought to be done!
