Tethering - Sprint

Hi,

I have been able to tether with my 8703 but I got a curve and now when I try to tether (using Sprint mobile broadband software) does not recognize that the BB is connected.

Just wondering if there is anything I could check nsettings wise that might be blocking my connection?

Try using the Sprint SmartView software instead of the mobile broadband software (that's what I use with my Curve). Can download it from Sprint - Software Downloads - Select your device type. It's listed as a download for all the broadband cards.

Oh, and you may also need to have Desktop Manager installed on your PC, too. I think that software contains the device drivers for the BB devices.

Downloading know. I will let you know.

Thanks

It worked like a charm. Thats what I love about this forum, that no matter how f'd up the situation some one else has probably experienced it or has a solution.

Thanks again. (y)

In terms of desktop mgr (dm), there is an option on the bb.com page where all the dm versions are located to download only the usb and modem drivers. I tried this one one of my many pcs as I did not want the full-blown dm installed on that old clunker. It seems to work!

Hello,

I have the curve with Sprint also, with a an unlimited family data plan. Does using your phone in this way (tethering), cost extra on your monthly bill?

Thanks.

I can tell you that it hasn't cost extra on mine - but you never know what any carrier is going to change for new contracts. I checked with a sprint store (the techs on the phone gave me 3 different answers in one phone call one time), and they stated that if I had unlimited data, I could access it either via the phone itself, or by tethering. But double check for yourself, just in case!

Not permissible on Sprint.

Taken from the Terms and Conditions of their "Everything" plans:

"Except with Phone-as-Modem plans, you may not use a phone (including a Bluetooth phone) as a modem in connection with a computer, PDA, or similar device. We reserve the right to deny or terminate service without notice for any misuse or any use that adversely affects network performance."

You need the add-on, or they can terminate your service.

Wow. Thanks for the info paranoid and kath.....Dont know if I want to go this route afterall....but thanks again.

Ok, just went back and checked. I used my phone as a tethered modem for 12 hours across 2 days 3 weeks ago. My bill shows the kb, and also shows no charge, as it did last time I needed to do this.

Per Sprint, as of November 2008, if you have a Blackberry AND the everything data plan, tethering is included.

What they've changed since then, I don't know, but it would be worth it for the poster to check.

Wirelessly posted

Thanks. As I have read more and more post it seems like "everyone is doing it" so I think I'm going to give it.a try. Well see what happens....

I have tethered for over 6 months and was not charged extra and at the time I was not on a everything plan but I did pay for the BB service. I have since moved to an Everything plan and I don't see any changes in my rates. Sprint can only see your tethereing as data flow which shows up the same when you use your phone anything on the network (browser, apps). They can't tell the difference (that's how it was explained to me).

I use it and I have downloaded 100 mb files and nothing came back. You should have no problem.

have had sprint internet for 8 years now. when it first rolled out. and still full of glitches. i've always used my phone as a modem. no extra billing. started off with a regular phone. before color screens and text and all the other fancy smancies we have now. i was a long haul driver, and it was my only source for internet. mobile cards didn't even exist back then. blackberry was just getting started. with it's email only devices. got my first pda phone 3 years ago, it was winmo. one night i left it on and downloaded 2 gigs. no problems. now i have the curve. all these years i've only paid 10 bucks a month for internet. now it's a bundled package. but my overall monthly price is still the same it was 8 years ago.

it was 10 bucks when i first started. it went up to 15 when i got a winmo phone. then i started using text so my plan upped to 65 bucks. now it's 70 with my bb. 450 minutes is all i need as we all work and don't talk during the day. except for text. but then, who uses there phone anymore these days other then for a typewriter. having a phone to actually be used as a phone is a thing of the past these days.

southwestcomm 04-23-2009 11:43 PM

PAM is extra on the plans except the $39.99 BB data plan.
